What Tommy Talks About

Digital Regulations: Texting to TikTok

Knowing who sent the email, who commented on your post, or who’s on the other end of the line not only keeps you and your loved ones safe, but also gives accountability a new meaning. Digital regulation has has its sites on SMS and voice calls but not necessarily social media. Why is that? What needs to change? And who should flap butterfly wing first?

FYI: ISVs and SMBs have a real SMS Regulations Situation

Changes in the SMS ecosphere don’t just affect SMS providers; large and small companies sending SMS get the brunt of it. Large companies can likely burden the cost, but SMBs need someone in their corner. Fair rates, consistent guidelines and flexible campaigns, will give SMBs a fighting chance.

SMS 101: Public Policy, Technology & Anthropology

As a communication channel, SMS is relatively new, with seemingly old school styling, but don’t let that fool you. SMS is still the most ubiquitous option in your communications tech-stack for getting results. Tommy tells you how and why, and what’s defining SMS today.

About Tommy

  • Tom’s the co-founder and CEO of Red Oxygen, a leading business SMS service provider of 24 years.

Tom has over 30 years of experience in the American and Australian IT/Telecommunications industry. Before co-founding Red Oxygen, he was the Country Manager for InterVoice in Australia/New Zealand. Prior to taking over the Australia/New Zealand sales efforts, Tom held various sales and marketing positions within InterVoice-Brite and Arrow Electronics.

Tom is passionate about SMS but would still almost always rather be swimming or snowshoeing in Tahoe with his rescue pitty, Betty.

  • As a co-founder of the first A2P (application to person) SMS provider, Tommy’s knowledge runs deep, with over 30 years in the telecom biz, some would call him the technology’s founding father.

As one of the visionaries of the A2P messaging space, Tom and Red Oxygen delivered the world’s first SMS through Outlook '97 using Nokia 5110s before the CPaaS space existed.

  • If you do, its possible that you’re as old as Tommy, but do you hold 9 top 10 times in the US for swimming 50/100/200 freestyle and breaststroke?

But back to the Nokia: Listen to one of Tom’s podcasts to learn how 5110s were the cornerstone of business SMS as we know it.

  • Tom founded Red Oxygen when trying to solve a problem for one of his customers that was spending $8 per customer to let then know their bill was overdue.

“Why not just text them?” sparked the idea for sending text messages from your computer, and the rest is history, as they say.

Red Oxygen is a leading provider of SMS managed services, and has been for 23 years. Bootstrapped and scrappy, Red Oxygen has grown into a company that sends 400 million messages to people in over 50 countries.

Headquartered in San Francisco and with offices in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, Red Oxygen has worked with some of the world’s top brands, including: Philips, Orkin, Skechers, Southern Methodist University, Siemens, Yamaha and more.
